ABOUT US

Our Story

Mother of Mercy Hospice and Health Centre (MOMH) is located in Chilanga, a peri-urban area, 15 kilometers out of Lusaka the capital city under Chilanga District. The hospice functions as stand-alone unit and provides palliative care (PC) services to the terminally and chronically ill patients and their families within our catchment area of 29,069 population.

In 1997, the Mother of Mercy Hospice was opened for terminally ill patients as an extension of the Home Based Care (HBC) services. This is the first hospice established in Zambia.

HIV/AIDS cases were increasing at an alarming rate and thus it was becoming difficult for the formal health sector to take care of such cases since they needed more care and support making hospital beds limited.

We are operating in a developing country, in a location where the poorest of the poor live. The services that we render to the community are basically charitable. We are a non-profit making organization that depends entirely on donor support and individuals both locally and abroad.

The Hospice currently operates with the support from

  • Ministry of Health

  • Chilanga District Management Health Office

  • Churches Health Association of Zambia

  • Vision Zambia – UK

  • Individual donors
